Food - a fact of life conference at Sheffield Hallam University inspires food teachers and recognises young people’s achievements
The Food – a fact of life conference for food and nutrition teachers, in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University, took place on Saturday, 25th January, inspiring teachers and celebrating the wonderful world of food and nutrition. Food – a fact of life is the British Nutrition Foundation’s education programme for schools, run in partnership with the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
The conference included the British Nutrition Foundation Drummond Education Awards* for pupils across England who achieved the highest marks in a GCSE or A-Level equivalent food-related subject. The Awards were presented by Chris Mapp, owner of The Tickled Trout in Barlow and Master Chef of Great Britain.
Following the Drummond Education Awards, teachers took part in a series of practical workshops to support them in delivering engaging and relevant food lessons in school. Workshop topics include sensory evaluation, new product development and functions of ingredients.
We’re delighted to present the Drummond Education Awards to pupils who have excelled in food related subjects. It’s vital that young people are educated about food and nutrition and are inspired to work in the fantastic world of ‘food’. We’re particularly grateful to Chef Chris Mapp for presenting the awards.
Frances Meek, Education Services Manager, British Nutrition Foundation
Elsa Healey, Senior Education Manager, AHDB said “We are proud to deliver hands-on and interactive conferences like this as part of the Food - a fact of life education programme. Events like these provide valuable development opportunities for teachers to deepen their understanding of sustainable food production and explore real-world examples that they can share with their pupils.”
Dr Caroline Millman, Sheffield Hallam University, said “As course leader of the 'food technical professional' apprenticeship at Sheffield Hallam, I welcome any opportunity to inspire teachers and celebrate the wonderful world of food and nutrition research and education – it’s a gift to be part of the career journey of so many talented young people.”
During the day, teachers also heard from Rebecca Wilson, sheep and arable farmer and her role in sustainable food production, careers in the world of ‘food’, and heard an update on the latest resources and support from the Food – a fact of life education programme.
