Food - a fact of life conference at Sheffield Hallam University inspires food teachers and recognises young people’s achievements
The Food – a fact of life conference for food and nutrition teachers, in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University, took place on Saturday, 25th January, inspiring teachers and celebrating the wonderful world of food and nutrition.
Food – a fact of life is the British Nutrition Foundation’s education programme for schools, run in partnership with the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
The conference included the British Nutrition Foundation Drummond Education Awards* for pupils across England who achieved the highest marks in a GCSE or A-Level equivalent food-related subject. The Awards were presented by Chris Mapp, owner of The Tickled Trout in Barlow and Master Chef of Great Britain.
Following the Drummond Education Awards, teachers took part in a series of practical workshops to support them in delivering engaging and relevant food lessons in school. Workshop topics include sensory evaluation, new product development and functions of ingredients.
The Awards for qualifications in Scotland were presented by Gary Maclean, Scotland's National Chef and MasterChef: The Professionals winner, at the teacher conference held at Abertay University in November 2025.

We’re delighted to present the Drummond Education Awards to pupils who have excelled in food related subjects. It’s vital that young people are educated about food and nutrition and are inspired to work in the fantastic world of ‘food’. We’re particularly grateful to Chef Chris Mapp for presenting the awards.

About Food - a fact of life
Food - a fact of life (FFL) is a comprehensive, progressive education programme which is founded on a whole-school approach. The programme communicates up-to-date, evidence-based, consistent and accurate messages around ‘food’ to all those involved in education. The FFL programme meets the requirements of food and nutrition curricula across the UK. It also aligns with other subjects including design and technology, health and wellbeing, science, numeracy, literacy, geography, religious education, and RSE and health education.
