We welcome yesterday's announcement from the Secretary of State for Rural Affairs, Steve Reed that the Government will develop a new national food strategy in 2025 focussed on four key areas; Food Security, Health, Environment, and Economy.
On health, the strategy will aim to provide healthier and more accessible food to combat obesity, give children a healthier start in life and support longer, healthier lives for adults. This builds on the Government’s existing work to tackle obesity and improve health.
The aim is to work with the food sector to build strong partnerships that enable the strategy to develop. To this end, the Government will form a coalition with stakeholders from the food sector including the food industry, academics and charities.
The British Nutrition Foundation exists to promote health and wellbeing and prevent diet-related ill health through evidence-based nutrition science. We believe strongly in working collaboratively to build a healthier, more sustainable food environment.
Obesity and diet-related ill health are widespread in the UK. We acknowledge that the links between food, diet, and obesity are complex, and need a systems-wide approach in order to achieve meaningful change. Therefore, this initiative, led by Defra, which includes cross collaboration across Government departments, the UK devolved nations and collaboration from stakeholders from across the food system, represents a significant step forward.
About the British Nutrition Foundation
Connecting people, food and science for better nutrition and healthier lives
The British Nutrition Foundation is a registered charity that provides impartial, evidence-based information about food and nutrition. We translate nutrition science in engaging and actionable ways, working extensively with people in academia, health care, education, communications and the food system, for public benefit.
We safeguard our independence through robust governance, with an independent Board supported by an Advisory Committee and a Scientific Committee, both of which draw upon a broad range of experts from academia, government, industry, and public life. Our governance is weighted towards the scientific community, universities, and research institutes, and those from education, finance, media, communications, and HR backgrounds.
Funding for the British Nutrition Foundation is from membership subscriptions; donations; project grants from food producers and manufacturers, retailers and food service companies; conferences; publications, training, trusts, and foundations. The British Nutrition Foundation is not a lobbying organisation, nor does it endorse any products or engage in food advertising campaigns.
