Promoting healthier takeaway choices

8th March 2023

Uber Eats and the British Nutrition Foundation join forces to promote healthier choices

  • Working together, they aim to encourage restaurants on the platform to provide healthier options and to encourage their customers to make healthier choices
  • This comes as 70% of small and medium sized restaurants Uber Eats surveyed reported a lack of clarity about what constitutes healthier food.

Uber Eats has announced today that it has joined with the British Nutrition Foundation as part of its commitment to help with tackling obesity and improving the accessibility and convenience of healthier options for consumers.

In the UK, the delivery platform has 61,000 restaurant partners and merchants - including 30,000 SMEs - and regularly delivers millions of meals. And as a market leader, Uber Eats believes it can have a meaningful impact by motivating customers to make healthier, more sustainable choices on its platform, and by encouraging its restaurant partners to provide these options.

Uber Eats will be working with the British Nutrition Foundation to develop strategies to encourage restaurants and customers to prepare and select healthier choices. In a recent survey* conducted by Uber Eats, almost 70% of small restaurants reported that they believe that a lack of clarity for them around what constitutes ‘healthy’ food affects take up of healthier options by consumers.

This comes at a time when Uber Eats is planning to roll out a new marketing campaign across grocery partners, Fresh Mondays, which will offer a 50% discount on thousands of selected fruit and vegetables at hundreds of selected stores across the country on a Monday.**

Matthew Price, Uber Eats UK General Manager said: “Uber Eats is proud to join with the British Nutrition Foundation, one of the leading nutrition charities in the UK, as their first delivery app member. As a platform that regularly delivers millions of meals and works with over 61,000 restaurants, including 30,000 SMBs, we know we have a responsibility to help tackle obesity. We want to help customers make informed choices about the food they eat and also support our restaurant partners in offering a greater range of healthier options.”

Elaine Hindal, Chief Executive at the British Nutrition Foundation, said: “We are pleased to welcome Uber Eats as a corporate member of the British Nutrition Foundation, at a time when our new five-year strategy sets out our intent to help change the food environment through our partner relationships and members.

Food delivery apps play an increasingly influential role in promoting healthier, more sustainable food options and we are encouraged by the ambition and commitment of Uber Eats to be sector-leading in this regard. We look forward to working with Uber Eats to help create meaningful change that promotes healthier choices for all.”

Working together, Uber Eats and the British Nutrition Foundation will develop an evidence-based framework, co-created with restaurant partners, that will support the wide range of Uber Eats’ platform partners to provide healthier choices. About the British Nutrition Foundation

Connecting people, food and science for better nutrition and healthier lives

The British Nutrition Foundation is a registered charity that provides impartial, evidence-based information about food and nutrition. We translate nutrition science in engaging and actionable ways, working extensively with people in academia, health care, education, communications and the food system, for public benefit.

We safeguard our independence through robust governance, with an independent Board supported by an Advisory Committee and a Scientific Committee, both of which draw upon a board range of experts from academia, government, industry, and public life. Our governance is weighted towards the scientific community, universities, and research institutes, and those from education, finance, media, communications, and HR backgrounds.

Funding for the British Nutrition Foundation is from membership subscriptions; donations; project grants from food producers and manufacturers, retailers and food service companies; conferences; publications, training, trusts, and foundations. The British Nutrition Foundation is not a lobbying organisation, nor does it endorse any products or engage in food advertising campaigns.
