Education Officer

The British Nutrition Foundation exists to give people, educators, and organisations access to reliable information on nutrition. Grounded in science, working with experts, we support people and organisations on their journey towards a healthy, sustainable diet. Our vision is that everyone can access healthy, sustainable diets, and we contribute to this by translating evidence-based nutrition science in engaging and actionable ways.

Role context

The purpose of the Education Team is to:  

  • provide support, guidance and direction around food and nutrition education, including a whole school approach, for early years, primary and secondary schools and universities across the UK;
  • produce evidence-based and up-to-date resources to support educators in UK early years, primary and secondary settings around healthy eating, cooking and where food comes from;
  • contribute to, and support, educators’ planning, implementing and monitoring of their personal and professional development;
  • develop educators’ knowledge and skills through relevant, timely and appropriate online and face-to-face training;
  • champion the importance of good food and nutrition education to thought leaders, decision makers, government and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

 

An Education Officer will:

  • create and update education resources for the British Nutrition Foundation’s websites, in line with the appropriate branding and tone (foodafactoflife.org.uk, nutrition.org.uk, nutrition.training);
  • explore opportunities, such as visiting schools, co-writing with pupils and working in partnership with other organisations, in order to create content that is appropriate and appealing to children and young people;
  • upload content to the British Nutrition Foundation’s websites, namely Food – a fact of life;
  • co-write the British Nutrition Foundation’s newsletters in relation to education projects;
  • collect and collate statistics relating to the British Nutrition Foundation’s education work, e.g. website stats, training events;
  • contribute to the delivery of the British Nutrition Foundation’s education events, e.g. teacher conferences, webinars;
  • present the work of the British Nutrition Foundation at internal and external conferences and events;
  • represent the British Nutrition Foundation at external meetings/stakeholder events, in relation to schools education and qualifications;
  • contribute to projects and consultancy work including with Corporate Members;
  • keep up-to-date with curriculum and pedagogy changes in UK schools, and share this information with colleagues;
  • contribute to the successful delivery of the British Nutrition Foundation’s Healthy Eating Week.
  • support the delivery of the education element of the British Nutrition Foundation’s strategy; and
  • support other members of the British Nutrition Foundation in identifying and securing funding for project work/consultancy.

Note: These are flexible dependent on British Nutrition Foundation and project work timelines and priorities and will be reviewed annually.

 

Essential Criteria

  • An appropriate teaching qualification with a focus on food, e.g. QTS, PGCE, PGDE.
  • 3 or more years food teaching experience.
  • Evidence of excellent food teaching practice.
  • Excellent written, interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to speak to different audiences.
  • An innovative approach to resource creation.
  • Ability to develop education resources in digital formats (or a willingness to learn), e.g. videos, interactive activities.
  • Ability to manage change and to adapt to unexpected demands.
  • Ability to assess priorities and manage competing deadlines both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Proven ability to work co-operatively in a small team environment.
  • Demonstrate a clear commitment to develop and learn in the role.

Desirable Criteria

  • A food-related degree.
  • Experience of teaching food to primary school pupils and/or pupils with additional needs.
  • Experience of engaging parents/carers and/or community groups in food and nutrition.
  • Experience of using digital platforms (e.g. Umbraco, Teams, Brevo) or a willingness to learn.
  • A nutrition qualification or keen interest in nutrition.

Special features of the role

  • This is a hybrid role with two days a week in the BNF office in London.
  • Some travel may be required as part of this role.
  • Occasional out of hours and weekend working may be required to support the Education Team when running online and face-to-face training events.
